Mengmeng Luo

PhD Soil Science (Whitman Lab)

Research Assistant

Mengmeng Luo is a Ph.D. Candidate in Soil Science working with Dr. Thea Whitman. Her research explores how subsequent fires and post-fire translocation influence soil pyrogenic carbon stocks and properties across soil depths under different fire regimes in Wisconsin. Her work integrates soil biogeochemical analyses, laboratory and field-based heat flux measurements, and carbon modeling to better understand the fate and persistence of fire-derived carbon in soils.

Mengmeng completed her M.S. in Agroecology and Soil Science in the Whitman Lab in 2023; and before that, she received her B.S. in Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems from UC Davis.

Beyond her research, Mengmeng maintains an active engagement with the arts. She completed an Art Studio minor during her undergraduate studies and continues to create art for her communities (including the new department logo and Soil MIR website logo). In her free time, she enjoys drawing, photography, and attending live performances, including musicals, plays, and concerts.
